The dictionary defines homunculus (plural, homunculi) as "a small man or midget." The choice of a Latin word to title this series was an intentional nod to my past. Latin...the "dead" language...played a key roll early in my life. As a child forced to participate in daily church services, its esoteric syllables lent an air of intrigue to my boyhood.
I first conceived the idea for these miniature beings as a way to represent many of the facets of my persona that had been obscured and silenced by physical challenge. Like the ancient tongue that gave rise to their group name, these creatures aren't readily defined, their origins steeped in mystery. Each possesses a distinct personality...some dynamic and flamboyant...others more reserved, but no less spirited. Collectively, they comprise a found object tribe that become vessels of voice.
Like their creator, they're a reclaimed assemblage of seemingly disparate items pieced together into novel forms, resurrected remnants finding new life, fresh purpose, and deeper meaning beyond their initial origins.
